War Horse in the Front Room
When the Only Way Out Is to Get More Involved
If it’s not one thing it’s a motherfuckin’ other.
I give my more, to receive that less. The electric meter just continuously eats up those quids, and the car is drinking that diesel like there’s no tomorrow. I need to get that energy, so I can get big and face the day but there’s nearly nothing left to eat, because it all just mess up my DNA.
I might have just got my shit together, and then there’s another fucking fine waiting there at breakfast in a letter.
I’m walking by the sea and contemplating this life, and feeling like I need a break from the world. The only way out is to get more involved. If I play my cards right, I should be able to sail out of here soon enough.
Wait, I don’t even have a boat.
At least then no-one can rock it more.
I’m done with this shit. No-one has respect no-more, and it feels like the people around me don’t wanna see me succeed.
I remember when I nearly got my drum tracks done, but the stupid fuck changed the bit-rate because he wanted to be on another level to the others and now I can’t even use it. That was when I nearly recovered from the 4 or 5 months in studio where someone else got to reap what I sow.
I can’t believe they told me to my face that it is funny to watch me suffer.
It’s a struggle, yet I keep on pushing through, hoping things will add up at some point and I’ll get my breakthrough. How many years I don’t know.
I’m done with all this shit. No-one even knows me, or what I’ve been through. I can’t even tell because no-one would believe me.
Best I can do is just stay cheerful, and be of service whenever I can. I ain’t giving away my money ever again though. That never made a friend, just another jealous heart who wants more and more.
Wow my mind is so full of things that never worked out the way I wished them. And too many friends I lost along the way.
I did another loop of the headland and headed back to the flat where I pay too much rent and have to live right next to people who don’t respect me.
The world seems so backwards I was thinking to myself.
Where is GOD in all this?
Does GOD even care?
I feel like I took a wrong turn, exactly like the devil wished I would. It can’t be like this forever though surely. I have a destiny, and I’m so willing to the good work even when it seems like everything has fallen apart.
Surely all that matters is my attitude, and my heart.
I said my prayers and brushed my teeth, arranged a few stones so I could hopefully get in the zone and got into bed with the intention of getting some rest before the next day.
Restless, I’m not feeling it.
I open the window, let in some fresh air. A few fleeting memories pass through my mind like the time when I had a best friend who really cared and why the hell did she get so jealous of me making friends with Hettie and wanting to go next door to meet Sadie!?
That really pissed me off I thought.
Everything is like a battle, I just wanna live my life and make it happen, but I just don’t fit in and people seem to love treading on my toes.
Oh well, I best just keep on keeping on, because somewhere out there someone is relying on me.
Totally exhausted from over thinking, I fell asleep.
Couldn’t have been much later, I awoke again and felt a sense of something new.
Strangely energized, I felt curious of a different kind of feeling in my environment and got up out of bed to check it out.
I walked out of the bedroom and into the front room only to find a full grown steed lying there on the carpet.
This mysteriously majestic horse had somehow let itself in to the flat and was curled up there on the floor, its glistening coat shimmering in the dim light coming from the bedroom behind me.
What a figure of a beast there before me.
It lifted its head up and looked me straight in the eyes, and I knew somehow that it was telling me to mount it and get ready.
Ready for what I was wondering, but I didn’t argue with the strange telepathic instruction, and immediately I was upon its back, and calmly explaining that we should not stand up too quickly, for there is only so much headroom in the front room for a war horse and its rider.

The War Horse: The arrival of power when the conscious mind believes it has run out of road.
The story begins with depletion. Money disappears. Energy disappears. Trust disappears. Creative work is lost. Friendship fractures. The narrator reaches the point where even his relationship with God is being questioned.
And yet one thing remains intact: willingness.
He still prays. He still intends to serve. He still believes there is something he is supposed to do. He goes to sleep not triumphant, but exhausted.
Then the symbol changes completely.
The thing waiting in the next room is not a rescue boat. It is not money. It is not somebody arriving to solve his problems.
It is a war horse.
- The Headland — Circling the known world while searching for an exit
- The Question to God — The point at which struggle becomes a confrontation with meaning
- Sleep — The exhausted conscious mind finally relinquishes control
- The Front Room — The extraordinary appearing directly inside the ordinary
- The War Horse — Strength, movement, readiness and the capacity to enter the next battle differently
- Mount Up — The invitation is not to escape life, but to participate in it with greater power
- The Low Ceiling — Even revelation has to negotiate the practical dimensions of ordinary life
The line hidden near the beginning contains the architecture of the entire story:
“The only way out is to get more involved.”
The horse does not arrive to carry the rider away from his life. It arrives so that he can meet what comes next.
SXP reading: When circumstances appear to have stripped away every visible source of momentum, the next movement may not arrive in the form the conscious mind was expecting.
The room has not become bigger.
The problems have not yet disappeared.
There is simply now a war horse standing in the middle of them.
